the commonwealth's operatic stage of emerging and award-winning voices.
Approaching it's 50th year of existence, the Virginia Opera provides rich opera experiences and exposure to some of the nation's most incredible voices on multiple regional Virginia stages- Richmond, Northern Virginia, and Hampton Roads.
overview
The Virginia Opera faced challenges in expanding educational outreach, community inclusivity, and establishing new, meaningful partnerships. The need to engage a younger audience and break traditional opera stereotypes prompted a search for innovative solutions. Strengthening connections within the community, particularly with young professionals and educational institutions, presented significant growth opportunities.
details
Educational Initiatives & Collaborations: Addressed the Opera's aspiration to engage with a younger demographic by initiating collaborations between the Opera and the new YELLOW School- exposing students to the art form and career possibilities in connection with opera including production, set design, voice, and makeup- and with an ODU Marketing professor, enabling college students to consult on various aspects of their marketing such as subscription packages and website design.
Community Partnerships & Inclusivity: Facilitated partnerships between VO and different organizations, including the CAN Foundation (contemporary arts org) , tHRive (local young professionals group), and ULI Virginia (national and global land use association) in order to bring opera into accessible spaces outside of traditional venues and avenues, and thus to new audiences.
Diversifying Audience & Leadership: Introduced numerous individuals and groups to the Virginia Opera, who would go on to engage the Opera as patrons, donors, and new board members.
